Movie BIRTH OF THE DRAGON in theatres now!

I just saw the movie BIRTH OF THE DRAGON. Great movie, well worth seeing in the theatre! It is well known that in order to enhance the drama and make a more complete movie, the producers took many liberties and did not stick strictly to historical facts. But what they have done is a fun movie with excellent gung fu that communicates the spirit and themes of Bruce Lee's early career in a very fresh and cool way. Sifu Davis has already seen it multiple times and hailed it as worthy. Get out there and see it while it's on the big screen!

Full Review Of Movie BIRTH OF THE DRAGON

WHAT IS SURF DRAGON GUNG FU?

Surf Dragon Gung Fu is my own expression of training in the Hardcore Jeet Kune Do system of Sifu Lamar M Davis II. This awesome body of research incorporates Sifu Davis' lifelong training, research and devotion to all phases of Bruce Lee's martial arts from Hong Kong to Seattle, Oakland, LA Chinatown, and everything in between! This comprehensive art encompasses western style boxing and fencing principles with a strong base of Wing Chun gung fu and massive modification based on Bruce Lee's own unique inspirations, research and methods. I began training with Sifu Davis in 1999 and have attended many of his training camps and seminars. I am currently very involved with his organization and I try to make as many of his seasonal training camps as possible. Most recently I attended his week-long instructor training camp and summer training camp and I will be attending the "Street Fighting" themed fall training camp at the end of October! If you wish to experience some of the most excellent and comprehensive training available in Bruce Lee's fighting methods, my advice is to contact Sifu Davis and commit to one of his training camps or seminars. Many talk the talk, but Sifu Davis "walks the walk!" Join "The JKD Wrecking Crew" and find out firsthand what that truly means! I hope to see you there and train with you under the watchful and stern eye of this true martial arts master.

Recently I have also enrolled as a student in Close Range Combat Academy Wing Chun, the organization founded by "Seef" Randy Williams and organized by him and Sifu Mario Lopez. As a source recommended by Sifu Davis and after considerable research, I am stoked to be training in this branch of Wing Chun! "Seef" Randy Williams and Sifu Mario Lopez were inspired by the example of Bruce Lee, so this organization is a natural and logical destination for those with roots in Jun Fan Gung Fu and Jeet Kune Do who wish to pursue specific additional training in Wing Chun. ABOUT SIFU LAMAR M DAVIS II

Sifu Davis' credentials, certifications and experience are extensive. I could not do it justice in a few sentences so I encourage you to read about it on his official website at: SIFU DAVIS BIOGRAPHY

MAGAZINE COVER APPEARANCES BY SIFU LAMAR M DAVIS II

WHAT IS YOUR HISTORY OF TRAINING WITH SIFU DAVIS?

I began training under Sifu Davis in Hardcore Jeet Kune Do in 1999. I was immediately impressed by the techniques and highly interested in the Wing Chun material as well as the fast striking and kicking methods displayed by Sifu Davis and his students!

Over the years I have been fortunate enough to get to experience training at sessions with many of Bruce Lee's original students including 2000 and 2001 Nucleus events (at which many of his Bruce Lee's students led workout sessions) and seminars with Jerry Poteet, Steve Golden, and Ted Wong. My experiences have validated for me that the Hardcore Jeet Kune Do curriculum developed by Sifu Davis is the most authentic, complete set of research and training practices available related to Bruce Lee's JKD. I also got to observe again and again the deep level of respect and friendship which Bruce Lee's original students held towards Sifu Davis. Sifu Davis is the real deal, and he teaches the real stuff. Methodically, correctly, effectively, in depth.

IS THERE A SURF DRAGON GUNG FU SCHOOL?

Not yet! Perhaps one day. If I reach a point that I feel my skill is at a full instructor level sufficient to run a school and properly represent and teach all phases of the art at all levels from beginner to advanced, and there is a demand or need within the community for such instruction, it could happen. It would continue to be under the direction and authority of Sifu Davis and the Hardcore Jeet Kune Do Chinese Gung Fu Association and would serve to celebrate and perpetuate this art.

WHAT IS YOUR LEVEL OR RANK WITHIN THE HARDCORE JEET KUNE DO ORGANIZATION?

I am an Apprentice Instructor Level II, familiar with the basic Intermediate Student Level material and qualified to teach it to others.

Certificates from various training camps and events taught by Sifu Lamar M Davis II from 2000 to 2017. Training in Jeet Kune Do with Sifu Davis and his students has been a valuable enrichment to my life!

WHERE CAN I ATTEND A SEMINAR OR TRAINING CAMP?

Sifu Lamar M Davis II holds seasonal training camps, classes and special events at his private instruction facility in Oneonta, Alabama. For more information see his website at:

HARDCORE JEET KUNE DO CHINESE GUNG FU ASSOCIATION

There you will find a large amount of excellent free articles and training material as well as contact information so that you can communicate with Sifu Davis directly. Sifu Davis also travels performing seminars and training camps throughout the United States and in other countries such as England, Ireland, Canada, Germany, and the Czech Republic.

CAN I GET INSTRUCTION FROM YOU?

As an apprentice level 2 instructor I am authorized to teach Beginning and Intermediate material from the Hardcore Jeet Kune Do curriculum. If you have a serious interest in this art and are willing to study some of the basic articles and material available for free on the Hardcore Jeet Kune Do Web site (www.hjkdcgfa.com) then I'm sure we could work something out.

DO YOU SURF?

I am an avid surfer since catching my first wave at Waikiki at the age of 10. Florida offers a variety of waves suitable for longboard and shortboard and whenever the surf is good, I hope to be on it! Surfing is excellent as a complementary training for Jeet Kune Do particularly in the areas of balance, timing and overall conditioning. The cosmic connection with the energy of the waves and their propagation over long distances has deep philosophical resonance with our ideals as gung fu practitioners.

DO YOU PLAY SOME KIND OF MUSIC?

Yes I enjoy recording music and making surf videos. You can see that at

BILL SURF music and videos

ARE YOU FROM MARS?

Yes.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE JEET KUNE DO TECHNIQUE?

Whatever technique I am training at the moment!

IS CHINESE CULTURE OR LANGUAGE NECESSARY TO STUDY THIS ART?

The art that forms the foundation for Jeet Kune Do is the Chinese martial art of Wing Chun gung fu. Therefore we have a cultural affinity and respect for the Chinese origins and traditions. We do not train wearing traditional uniforms and we generally conduct training in a practical and non-traditional manner, however we do extensively employ Chinese terminology for the various kicks, punches, and other techniques. Many of these terms can be seen for reference at: HARDCORE JEET KUNE DO TERMINOLOGY

ARE THERE ANY UPCOMING EVENTS I SHOULD KNOW ABOUT?

The 2017 Hardcore Jeet Kune Do Fall Training Camp will be held on October 27, 28 and 29 at Sifu Davis' private martial arts academy in Oneonta, Alabama.

I will be there! Contact me for more info or feel free to contact Sifu Davis directly through his main school page:

CORE GROUP OF INSTRUCTOR TRAINEES AROUND SIFU DAVIS - - PARTICIPANTS IN THE WEEKLONG INSTRUCTOR TRAINING CAMP

Needless to say the training was a "blast" but extra in-depth both from a historical and practical standpoint. Because it was an instructor trainee class, we could move quickly through material and both cover and practice a lot.

Training began with historical foundation of Bruce Lee's fighting method and the major areas of his training were evaluated for their influence into the entirety of his fighting arts as he is KNOWN to have practiced them in different stages of his life. Yes this includes Wing Chun which he was practicing up through the very end of his life.

The major influences of Wing Chun, Fencing, Western Boxing, and other gung fu styles were shown in their Jeet Kune Do applications.

The school is looking great. Floors, walls, mook jongs, shelving for training gear etc are all in great shape and laid out in the most functional setup yet.

Sifu Davis was in no mood for messing around when it came time for practice. His burning desire to perpetuate the highest level of training in the PROVEN REALITY of Bruce Lee's martial art was evident day after day. As potential future instructors of this art, we were charged with knowing not only how to perform and teach but why it is so and where the influence of each technique comes from.

On the last day a group from VALOR JKD joined and the training intensity increased another notch. It was a welcome experience to get to train with some large powerful guys and generally with a fresh group who had good skills. Fun!

So in summary the Hardcore Jeet Kune Do Summer Training Camp and Instructor Training Camp 2017 was an excellent event. In depth training in stance, footwork, strikes, kicks, stop kicks, and basic trapping was placed throughout in a historical context DOCUMENTED by photos, recollection and teaching of Bruce Lee's original students. By "Bruce Lee's original students" we mean not only the 5 of them who have certified Sifu Davis as a full instructor but the many others he has had the opportunity to communicate and train with. A curriculum build from and including all phases of Bruce Lee's art from his roots in the Hong Kong gung fu scene to his schools in Seattle, Oakland, and Los Angeles and to what he was doing, practicing and teaching others up through his last days as a movie star.

FROM MY LATEST READINGS AND RESEARCH

"Bruce demonstrated the effectiveness of his style by having me throw punches at him from any and all angles. He said, 'Hit me any way that you can.' I threw jabs, hooks, and haymakers as fast as I could, but none of them made contact. Each punch was blocked and I always ended up staring at the wrong end of Bruce's fist. Once he had shown me that he could stop all my punches from long range, he demonstrated that I was completely helpless at close range. Everytime that his hands made contact with mine, I was unable to do anything. His hands controlled mine with a kind of friction that stopped any kind of forward movement. Whenever I tried to nullify this friction by changing my angle of attack, Bruce would also change his angle of defense and my hands were still unable to move forward. I figured that if I wasn't able to get in, I would at least be able to get away. But when I tried to withdraw my hands I found that I wasn't able to pull them back without getting hit. Next I attempted to disengage and go around his hands, but this strategy was met with direct strikes to my chest. Before Bruce finished his demonstration of Wing Chun hand entrapment techniques, I was convinced that he could both hit and control me at will." - - - Jesse Glover, Bruce Lee's first student and assistant instructor, from his book "Bruce Lee" in which he tells about meeting and training with Bruce in Seattle Washington

HOW TO SURF THE WAVES OF LIFE!

Life is made up of energy. Energy organizes itself into waves. By applying wave-riding principles and philosophy to life, you can surf the waves of life and be in harmony with the universe!

It's not surprising that the ancient Hawaiians referred to surfing as "The Sport Of Kings." These amazing people lived on a chain of beautiful islands immersed in a life-giving emerald sea. To them the ocean was like a vast universe surrounding their world, teeming with energy, fish and beauty. They understood it had different moods, including creative destruction. Much like the volcanos that built their world in fiery acts of creation, the waves too had their dangerous side when massive walls of water crashed ashore in freak swells or tsunamis. Understanding the ocean, its signs and rhythms was a matter of survival.

Also a matter of fun and athleticism! From riding the waves with just their bodies to employing huge wooden surfboards, the earliest reports of these people include amazed accounts of their wave-riding prowess. While kings used their authority and power to keep certain waves to themselves, they were not the only ones playing among the waves!

Modern science has revealed the essential nature of energy waves thoughout our existence. Atoms, subatomic particles and quantum bits of pseudo-stuff are often described in terms of frequency, probability distribution and "wave packets." That's wave science!

Business and social cycles, seasons, even the cycles of day and night remind us that we are immersed in a sea of waves featuring all types of undulating and vibrating energy. A new business or a new relationship is like a new wave. Looking deeper, we see that each wave is composed of sub-waves. A date. A project. An important meeting or deadline.

How do we master the wave and have a victorious ride, and avoid the dreaded wipeout!?

Here are some basic surfing principles which with some imagination and ingenuity, you can adapt to your own endeavors to enhance your success. It's all about getting in synch with the rhythms of life and expressing those rhythms through your actions.

1) Identify the most promising wave. In business or investment, many opportunities present themselves. You need those opportunities that are not only the biggest but that have the right form. Sometimes in surfing the biggest wave is a "closeout" and not very rideable. You need to identify life waves that not only have a lot of energy within them, but are within your ability to catch and maneuver on. If it's in an area that's new to you, you should start out "getting on your feet" on some smaller waves so you can get the hang of it.

2) Get in synch with the timing of the wave. Just like there is a certain window of time when you should show up for a party (not too early, not too late), all events and opportunities have their own pace and tempo. Match your timing to the timing of the opportunities you pursue. Your actions will become an extension or expression of the wave's timing.

3) Match your maneuvers to the ever-changing geometry of the wave. Situations and opportunities change, develop and evolve. For highest performance (and best style!) match your strategies and efforts to the moment. Lemonade sells better when it is hot out. That person you have been wanting to get to know better may appear unexpectedly and by adjusting your plan in the moment you can make that connection.

4) Don't fear the wipeout! Every wave isn't the world's greatest and sometimes you will fall or mess up a maneuver. If you are surfing life reasonably within your limits, these wipeouts need not be devastating. They're just a part of life. The best surfers got that way by being willing to try difficult maneuvers that caused them to fall, and kept at it til they got it right. If necessary step back, study the waves and see how and where others are successfully riding them. Catch some of the smaller waves that are less crowded and get your mojo working again.

Surfing is one of the purest examples we have of how by getting in harmony with the universe we can be propelled by it. Matching our plans and actions to the natural cycles of life enhances our ability to do amazing maneuvers, experience great joy and elation, and succeed in our goals. If you can understand and apply the principles and philosophy of surfing to the "waves" you encounter in life, you will become a part of those waves and share in their cosmic energy. You'll express that energy through your actions, both controlling it and being guided by it. That's the spirit of real surfing - whatever realm you do it in.

Now get out there and surf the day!

THANKS FOR YOUR INTEREST IN MY PAGE 'SURF DRAGON GUNG FU'. Whether you practice Jeet Kune Do, Wing Chun, or any of their sub-branches I wish you the best in your quest for martial excellence.

I have found awesome fitness and self defense benefits through training in Hardcore Jeet Kune Do. Being an apprentice level instructor trainee has also given me the opportunity to opened people's eyes about what Bruce Lee's fighting art is all about in its broad and complete form. Also the Wing Chun aspects give you superior infighting skills, are fun to train and give you tools to shut things down.

I encourage you to dig deeply into these arts on an intellectual level, seek out the quality training and information from the best instructors and find ways to train it that are motivational to you. It definitely is good to structure your training around some core sources, and in particular your main source - - as in my case, the Hardcore Jeet Kune Do curriculum taught by Sifu Lamar M Davis II which encompasses all phases of Bruce Lee's fighting, training and teaching methods as passed on and related by his original students, his own training notes, photo and video documentation, etc.
